Pushing the brand guidelines

The Coastal Science and Policy Program aims to educate emerging coastal science and policy leaders to identify critical threats to social and ecological systems and respond to complex problems with effective and practical alternatives.

I partnered with the CSPP to redesign and establish a new direction for their marketing collateral. The client believed the current materials were hard to read and felt disconnected from the program. My challenge was to come up with a solution that embraced the innovative nature of the program while simultaneously maintaining the more traditional look and feel of the university’s brand.

My approach
To meet the project’s goals, I addressed the format and slightly pushed the branding guidelines. In terms of size, I enlarged both pieces to allow for more negative space, information hierarchy, photography, and graphic elements. For the “Meet the Students” brochure, I chose a format that was more engaging and had room for storytelling. I created a trifold brochure and used each panel to gradually guide the readers through the content. In regards to the look and feel, I incorporated the brand’s secondary colors, added an ocean-inspired graphic element, and went with a clean typeface and layout.
